Bio
Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe, with his band, his Nigerian Soundmakers, is one
of Nigeria's top highlife artists; he has recorded more than 250 songs and is still
going strong. His music presents a simmering stew of influences-muted trumpet
flights borrowed from Cuba, funk from the United States, Fela's Afro-beat, and
the Ibo drum rhythms Osadebe grew up with.
Osadebe and his band have a relentless groove, accented by driving wah-wah
guitar rhythms, subtle lead guitar flights, a propulsive bass line, staccato horn
charts inspired in part by James Brown's Famous Flames, and a percolating
rhythm that maintains a balance between African and Cuban impulses. |
